Where do immigrants come from?
Immigrants have come to America from all over the world. When the United States was just colonies, immigrants came from England, Holland, Germany, France, and Scotland. During the early 20th century, immigrants came from Italy, Ireland, Greece, and Eastern Europe. Immigrants from Asia such as Japanese, Chinese, and Koreans moved to America in the mid-1800's and continue to immigrate to America today. Starting in the mid-1990's, about 80% of immigrants have come from Asia, the Caribbean, and Latin America. Today, the United States does have a process for allowing immigrants to move to America permanently, and hundreds of thousands of people move to America legally. The news media, politicians, and our society has been debating the issue of illegal immigration, and millions of people live in America at the present time illegally. In addition, one can never forget that millions of people from Africa were kidnapped, enslaved, and forced to move to America during the time of the Atlantic slave trade.
